In 2011, the LSU BCM (Baptist Collegiate Ministry) approached First Baptist Church about sponsoring a trip for college students to the University of Hawaii BCM. We prayed about it, and the Lord led us to accept the challenge!
So, during Spring break of 2012, we took 15 students/chaperones to Hawaii. Ten students stayed on the Island of Oahu and five students went and served on the Big Island. It was an amazing trip that allowed our students to serve in many different capacities, such as construction/manual labor, prayer walking, back-yard Bible clubs, BCM projects, block parties, girl-outreach programs, BCM worship services and fellowships, building churches and much more!
We are planning our next trip for March 28-April 7, 2013. We are honored to serve our Lord and Savior in Hawaii. The director of the BCM at the University of Hawaii, Arjay Gruspe, has a tremendous program and loves the students and the community. He gives his all to serve and has graciously invited us to come back next year. He has taught us that building relationships is a huge part of doing ministry in Hawaii. The Hawaiian community is very laid back, and we must have a purpose in all that we are doing.
Only one percent of the Hawaiian college community knows Jesus Christ. There is a great work to be done amongst the students in Hawaii. We at First Baptist will continue to partner with the Hawaiian Baptist Association to serve the people in that area for as long as the Lord leads. Hawaii is a beautiful place, but it is truly a lost island. Pray that God works through the University of Hawaii BCM and the local churches there. And pray for our First Baptist Church students as they answer the call to serve.
